How to Survive New York

I moved to New York nearly eight years ago. Moving to a big city can be a big change, especially if you are not from one. I left home at eighteen and lived in multiple big cities before moving to New York. Having experience prior to moving here helped me in major ways. However, New York is almost its own world with a lot to learn and navigate through. Here’s how you can survive New York.

Be Prepared Before Moving

It’s always a good idea to move to a new location with a job lined up. In New York, it’s best to also have a place to live before you settle into your dream apartment.

Save before moving to New York because it is a very expensive city.

Don’t Rely On Others

New York is full of short-term friendships and relationships. When you first move to the city, you’re excited to meet the locals but they aren’t trying to be your friend. They are trying to figure you out.

New York Gets Old Fast

I’ve spent nearly eight years living in New York and have enjoyed most of my time. Afterwhile, you’ll realize that once the excitement wears off, how different the people are, how dirty the streets are, and how you spend money on unnecessary things to prove your existence in the city.

You’ll Realize It Was Just An Experience

After I experienced New York, I realized that all of the money I spent to live in a big city such as New York could have bought me a home in another state. Check out the blog where I break down the cost difference between where I lived prior (Charlotte, NC) and Manhattan, New York. You’ll realize that your focus to be a New Yorker was worth the move, money, and time but financially could have gotten your money’s worth elsewhere.

Financial Cost

You’ll spend a lot of money on settling in New York. Be sure to save tons of money prior ($20,000) to support this. For every step you make, there are ten more before you reach the next.

Conclusion

Moving to New York is a great experience. I recommend everyone live in New York City at least once. Spend the money and enjoy the lifestyle. I spent a lot of time sightseeing, trying things the city had to offer, and spending money on expensive things. It was worth it. My goal is to live in New York for ten years. From there, I will decide if I would like to stay or move to another state. If you are planning on moving here, be prepared but have fun.
