Congratulations! You are a homeowner. How was the process? Do you regret it? What’s next? These are the types of questions you’ll get once you begin to own. Owning is a process. Depending on where you are buying, the process can be good or bad. Each person’s story is different. I’ve met many people who love it and I’ve met many people who regret it. Homeownership is a great accomplishment. Here are some tips and ideas on how to get started and what to expect:
Homeownership should be a slow process. You shouldn’t rush unless you have to move last minute for work relocation or military. You don’t want to rush and choose a home because you are excited, then later regret your decision.
There is a lot of preparation and paperwork involved. You may have less paperwork to prepare if you are paying cash. However, you go through the viewing process. Next, being approved. And, finally, the bidding process. That could take weeks to months.
Packing and moving. Once you have decided on a home, you’ll need to pack and move your things. You’ll also need to transfer everything over to the new home, such as electricity, cable, internet, insurance, etc.
Relocating. Relocating requires you to switch jobs or job location, school, doctor, etc. That can be a long and hard process.
NOW! You are moved into your new home and you are settling in. What’s next?
Repairs and remodeling. Hopefully, nothing needs to be repaired after moving into your home. Most people wait to repair or remodel their home until they have lived in it for a while. This will cost extra money to do, so make sure you are prepared financially.
Getting to know your neighborhood and neighbors. It may be a good idea to get to know your neighbors and the neighborhood quickly. That way, you can know your way around and get familiar with the area.
Restrictions and rules. KNOW YOUR HOA RULES. If you don’t have an HOA, lucky you. Know and understand what’s need from you to maintain your home and the land your home is on.
Additional costs. This is the hard part. Many potential home buyers don’t prepare for the additional costs that come with homebuying. This is when they begin to regret becoming a homeowner.
Well, there you have it. You are a homeowner. You have accomplished this amazing goal. Now, it’s time to enjoy it. Congratulations!
