Recently, I moved to El Paso, Texas. If you have been following me for awhile, I have mentioned on several occasions how I wanted to live in Texas. I always had my mind on Dallas, Texas – but after exploring Texas for months during my Nomadic Entrepreneur journey – I chose El Paso. I have lived in total, two countries and nine states. I have relocated a lot.
Moving takes a lot of planning and time. Mostly, relocating and getting settled. It all starts with where you want to live. Most move for their career or family changes. Like me, some people move just because. Moving doesn’t always require a why. If you are thinking about moving to a new state, city, or country – here’s how.
What to do prior:
#1) Decide where you want to move.
#2) Decide if you want to keep the same career or switch. If so, speak with your manager about a transfer or look for a similar job at a different company in the new location.
#3) Begin looking for a new apartment or home.
#4) It’s best to visit the location prior to get an idea of the environment and people.
How to begin the moving process:
#1) Once you decide what you want to do for work and where you want to live, decide if you want to take everything with you, sell everything and buy once you’re there, or do both.
#2) Decide on how you want to pack and move and when. Packing should begin a month in advance. I recommend moving to the new place two weeks before beginning your new career in the new state, country, or city.
#3) If you are selling things, begin posting what’s for sell online and throughout your neighborhood months before. Call friends, family, and those you know and let them stop by to buy or take what you are not taking with you.
What to do once you have moved:
#1) Unpack and make your new place like home. Clean and decorate how you want.
#2) Get to know your neighbors.
#3) Get to know your neighborhood. Find the closest grocery store, attend events, take a walk in the local park, or join a group.
#4) Celebrate your move. Host a housewarming party. Invite your neighbors and those you have met since moving.
#5) Try new hobbies and activities. This will help you feel more settled and help you meet new people.
#6) Go out alone. This will help you break any fears of moving that may come along with relocating.
